Join us as we screen a movie with discussion following. Choose just one or come for all three! Light snacks will be served.

October 6 - Live & Become
Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. His birth mother, who hopes for a better life for him, tells him "Go, live, and become," as he leaves her to board the plane. The film tells of his growing up in Israel and how he deals with the secrets he carries.

October 20- No Place on Earth
Filmmaker Janet Tobias traces the harrowing tale of 38 Ukranian Jews who survived the Holocaust by fleeing into caves for 18 months. Scavenging for food and water while constructing escape routes, the desperate survivors bide their time in the unforgiving environment, awaiting liberation.

November 3 - Half the Kingdom (documentary / special speaker)
Seven women from Canada, Israel, and the US strive to find common ground between religious and cultural tradition and contemporary feminist principles. Focusing on the movement of women from observers to active participants - including when a group of women came together to pray at the Western Wall in 1988 - the film addresses issues of feminism, religious pluralism, civil rights, and the struggle for self-definition.

But while a potluck of one main dish and 20 salads will be good, it lacks variety. So we decided to make a list of viable options! Typically, the main dish for a non-dairy potluck is chicken or beef.

Raise the Roof with Laughs at Micah: Info + Videos

Love to laugh? Congregation Micah is hosting a comedy night with NY Comedian Johnny Lampert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18 in our social hall. The event, Raise the Roof, will be an entertaining evening with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dancing, fun, and of course – comedy!

Lampert has made a name for himself around the country with club, television, and casino performances. He often appears at New York and Los Angeles clubs such as The Comic Strip, Caroline’s Comedy Club, and The Improv; and can be seen on TV with MTV, HBO Comedy Showcase, and Comedy Central, among others. Trump Plaza, Trump Castle, The Sands, and The Claridge are casinos that have welcomed Lampert to work with stars such as Dana Carvey and Chris Rock. Lampert has also performed at many Jewish events and is raved about by The Jewish Reporter. His success is expounded upon on his site, johnnylampert.com, and is the reason he was picked to entertain at Raise the Roof.

Tickets are available at Micah for $50 per person. Patron Levels are at the following prices and include two tickets to the show: $250 – Jackie Mason, $500 – Billy Crystal, $1,000 – Mel Brooks, $5,000 – Jerry Seinfeld. Sheket Shabbat: A Time for Restorative Rest

We all need rest. Shabbat is a time in which we have the opportunity to experience a kind of rest that can renew and inspire. Shabbat menuchah or rest is not only a stopping, but it is an active spiritual practice in which we reconnect with our highest vision for who we are.

Give yourself the gift of a truly restorative Shabbat as we gather in shared silence and in celebration of Tu B'Shevat on our first annual Sheket Shabbat. We will spend the day in prayer and meditation, enjoying the expansive beauty of our entire campus.

Instruction will be given for those who are new to this practice, and those with an established practice will find the spaciousness and support invaluable for deepening their experience of silence.

A healthy lunch will be provided as part of the $18 registration fee, and I am happy to answer any questions you may have beforehand.

If you are like most of us here in the office at Micah, you are in a whirlwind of summer coming to an end and trying to get back into the swing of school, or finishing off your summer vacation. Guess what? It’s almost fall! That’s right… High Holy Days are just around the corner!

This year we are offering the opportunity for you to send Rosh Hashanah greetings in the Messenger! Instead of purchasing cards for all of your close Micah friends (or for all of our hundreds of congregants!), we are making space for your New Year greetings and well wishes.

Think of this greeting space as you would the ads you purchased in the back of your yearbook!

All greetings can include either your family’s last name or each name of your family (up to 10 names total)

Think of it this way…If you mailed out even 200 greetings, you might forget someone, but if you don’t you still have to buy those cards for just under $200, stuff the envelopes, buy the postage (for 200 envelopes, that’s $90!), add the postage, and take them to be mailed. We’re doing all of that for you, for a lower cost, covering all of your local community bases, and even taking it to the mail center ourselves.
