Fundraising for Happy Tales Humane

Advocating for Happy Tales
By Jonah Foster

Pets are adorable, it’s a fact of life. That is, if they are cared for. Imagine a little, perfect Golden Retriever puppy…cute, right? Now that same puppy is homeless and neglected with matted fur, gravel imbedded in his paws and crying. That is where Happy Tales Humane steps in.

Happy Tales is a no-kill shelter in Franklin, serving all of Middle Tennessee. They are “providing humane, no-kill options for homeless and neglected animals”. That Golden Retriever…he’s safe now.
The seventh grade Happy Tales group is raising money and hand-me-downs for Happy Tales.

Remember, hand-me-downs are not just for humans! There are lots of animals in temporary residence who need blankets, toys, collars, leashes and carriers. And they really don’t mind if they are gently used! You can donate at Micah any Sunday during Religious School. And watch for announcements about our Spring Dog Wash Fundraiser!

Thank you for your support!!

Friends of Radnor Lake Fundraiser

Hi again. People often ask about me, Micah the Prophet and about me, Micah the Congregation. Nearly 500 families in the Middle Tennessee area have chosen to call Micah their spiritual home, the moral and religious center of their community. Together we are Micah.  Hear our voice:

Money doesn’t grow on trees, but trees grow with money
By Shai Rice

Radnor Lake StateNatural Area is a state park in Nashville, Tennessee. The 1,300+ acre nature preserve lies in the heart of Nashville. Five miles of unpaved trails wander through the woods surrounding the lake. Otter Creek Road runs through the middle of the park. Visitors to Radnor Lake enjoy wildlife native to Middle Tennessee, including beavers, bobcats, coyotes, minks, muskrats, river otters, and the white-tailed deer.
The park is a beautiful and attractive site to tourists and residents of Nashville. It is a thriving state park, but it needs your help! While there are no human threats to the park or the lake, like pollution, Otter Creek Road is overrun with erosion, and more and more trees are dying every year.
The Congregation Micah 7th grade social action group is working with Friends of Radnor Lake (FORL) in making Radnor Lake safer and cleaner. We are raising money through fundraisers and day-to-day donations, and we want you to take part! Donations will be collected every Sunday for the rest of the school year. We are looking for donations of any size!
You can always follow our instagram page, @FriendsofRadnor, for news and updates. Radnor Lake is a beautiful park, and we want to keep it that way, but we can’t do that without your support. Let’s keep our park clean and fresh for another 10 years. Everyone’s donation will make a difference.

Vote Today and Ensure the Future of Liberal Judaism

“I said:  ‘Listen, you rulers of Jacob, you chiefs of the House of Israel:
you ought to know what is right!’”
Micah 3:1

Hey. It’s Micah again. You know, the “One who is like God.” I am the descendant of the one who wrote that biblical book about his life in the holy land of Israel. Well nowadays, Israel has real problems; enemies all around her, and within her too.

As Reform Jews we often think that our core values have little voice in Israel. Our Judaism honors religious diversity, women’s rights, and a responsible peace — all of which need better expression in the holy land of today. The solution to the problem is through ARZA, the Association of Reform Zionists of America.

There’s an important election coming up in the World Zionist Organization, of which ARZA is a member. We can all help. You are eligible to vote if you’re over 18 and Jewish. You vote on the website. It only takes a moment. There is a $5 charge for those under 30 and a $10 charge for those 30 and older. (This money covers the cost of an outside organization hired to prevent fraud in the election.)

Why is the election important? The number of delegates to the WZC translates into money, and money translates into political influence. Because of its large number of delegates, ARZA has received $4,000,000 a year from the WZO since the last election.

That money is used to support the cause of Progressive Judaism (the term used in Israel for Reform Judaism). Voting for ARZA will help ensure that liberal Judaism will have the funding necessary to continue working for democracy and equality. As the strength of the Progressive movement has grown, there is more equality and acceptance for Progressive Jews, for women as equals, and for the acceptance of converts to Judaism. Such advances have come through action in grassroots movements and by working through the Israeli courts.

Micah is connecting you with the opportunity to impact what happens politically and socially in Israel, so that it can be a place that we all love and support. Take advantage!

The one who is like God....

“The word of the LORD that came to Micah…and he had a vision!”
(Micah 1:1)

Hi. Let me introduce myself. They call me Micah; the “One who is like God.” The greatest ancestor who bore my name did so thousands of years ago. S/He lived in the holy land of Israel, and was a prophet and an author. You can read about this stalwart of a Jew in The Book of Micah, found in the prophetical section of the Bible. Micah’s audience was mostly folks who lived in Jerusalem and his words were often a rebuke of people for dishonesty in the marketplace and all the corruption that pervaded the government. Not me, I live in Brentwood, TN, and most of what I have to say is meant to inspire you.

A large part of my mission is to nourish your soul; the spiritual side you often ignore. Souls in Judaism are by definition a perspective rather than a substance, a viewpoint toward objects rather than an object in and of itself. However intangible and indefinable, souls refer to that unknown component inside of each of us, which makes meaning possible. For it is our souls that help us to distinguish between ourselves and everything else that happens.

Micah (that’s me…that’s us) was conceived of in love by brave souls who were not afraid to dream, fantasize even about the imaginative possibilities in our natures. Why? Because the experience of reflective speculation in a safe place like our beautiful sanctuary or in the memorial garden or cemetery on our sacred grounds, helps transform an event into an experience, and a group of people into a community.

Hey, I am pretty sure the ones who founded me named me Micah because of how well the original Micah summed up what Judaism means to each individual soul:
“What is good?
What does God require of you?
Do justly, and love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8)
